Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky: Sociocultural Theory
Vygotsky's theory states "that development depends on interaction with people and the tools that the culture provides to help form their own view of the world" (Gallagher, 1999, para. 1). Three ways the cultural tool may be passed: 1. Imitative learning: a person copies another person. 2. Instructive learning: involves remembering the knowledge taught and applying it. 3. Collaborative learning: a group of people who have a goal of understanding and working together to learn a skill (Gallagher, 1999).

Jean piaget: stages of cognitive development
Piaget believed that all children are born with a minimally basic mental structure and all subsequent knowledge learning is learned. Piagets theory simplified states that intelluctal growth occurs through the process of adaptation. Adaptation is the sum of accommodation, equilibrium, and assimilation . Assimilation is using exisiting knowledge to deal with a new occurance. Accommodation is known for when the knowledge doesn't work in the situation, thus it is modified. Equilibrium is when ones cognitive development happens, resulting in adaptation and being successful in the situation (McLeod, 2012).
